Second-Half Surge Pushes Javelinas Past Lions

Box Score

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The A&M-Kingsville Javelinas hit eight three-point buckets in the second half and erased a six-point halftime deficit in a 75-74 win over A&M-Commerce on Thursday at the Steinke Center.

Devondrick Walker led the Lions (14-8, 3-7 LSC) with 17 points and tying a season-high eight rebounds, and LaDon Carnegie joined him in double figures with 11 points. Christian Macauley just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds to go with three blocks.

But the Javelinas (8-14, 3-7 LSC) got 17 points apiece from Irvin Hollinger and Ronald Scott in running keeping the Lions from their first win in Kingsville since the 2002-03 season.

"I felt like we were really guarding them, but there were several possessions in the second half where they just made shots," A&M-Commerce head coach Sam Walker said. "You have to give them a lot of credit for playing well at their place."

A&M-Commerce had a chance to tie on the game's final possession after the Javelinas' Ta'Quan McDew was issued a technical foul after two made foul shots to push the lead to 75-70. Walker proceeded to make both free throws, but De'Andre Carson's three-point try in the waning seconds was off line.

The Lions hit five three-point buckets and better than half of their shots from the field in the first half, but were 0-for-8 from beyond the arc in the second period.  That negated a 29-for-31 night at the foul line as a team.

Meanwhile, the Javelinas hit eight of their first nine from three-point range in the second half, taking the lead with 9:43 for the first time in the game, on two foul shots from Adonis Bailey.

But after Tyrie Wooten tied the game at 53-53, the Javelinas scored on each of their next six possessions, with five of those possessions resulting in three-point buckets, pushing their lead to its peak at 70-61 with 4:22 left in the game on a three-pointer by Jordan Jahr.

The first half was a series of runs for both teams, with the Lions leading by as much as 12 points before the Javelinas caught fire to the tune of a 14-2 run that erased a 24-12 deficit and knotted the game at 26-26 on a three from Irvin Hollinger.

But the Lions closed out the half strong, getting a bucket from Christian Macauley to spark an 8-2 run in the final 1:34 of the opening period to carry a 34-28 lead into the locker room after hitting 52.4 percent of their shots, including five triples.

The Lions will return home to host Angelo State on Saturday at The Field House. Tip time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
