COMMERCE, Texas – A&M-Commerce put together its most complete game of the conference slate on Wednesday, led by 19 points from
Devondrick Walker for a 89-79 win over Cameron at The Field House.
The Lions (14-6, 3-5 LSC) put five players in double figures and tied a season high with 12 three-pointers, leading by seven at the half and never trailing in the second period. The loss is the fifth in a row for the Aggies (9-10, 3-5 LSC), who could not finish off the season sweep of the Lions after picking up a 69-66 win in Lawton earlier in the season.
Walker's 19 points was tops on the team with the senior guard hitting for 14 points in the second half, including four of his five three-point tries.
LaDon Carnegie hit four more triples and added 16 points and five rebounds, while
Daniel Ehambe made it into double figures for the second straight game with 14 points off the bench.
The Lions also got solid games from
Kameron Price and
Christian Macauley, with Price just missing a triple double with 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Macauley put in a dozen points to go with eight rebounds and five blocked shots, one shy of his season high.
In all the Lions nearly had their best shooting night of the year, hitting 57.8 percent of their shots from the floor, while hitting better than 52 percent of their shots from downtown. They needed every one of them to outlast LSC preseason player of the year Craig Foster, who led all players with 32 points for the Aggies, including an 8-for-11 performance from downtown.
Carnegie and Ehmabe led the charge in the first half with 10 and nine points apiece, with the Lions canning five three-pointers as a team in building a 41-34 advantage at the break.
Cameron got nine of Foster's 15 fist-half points in the game's first nine minutes to hold a 19-16 lead before the Lions went on a 14-2 run sparked by five points from Walker and four foul shots from Carnegie to go up double digits at 31-21 with 6:13 left in the half. From there the Lions never led by less than four points on their way to the locker room.
A&M-Commerce then came out red hot in the second half, scoring the second period's first seven points and building the lead to its peak at 57-39 less than three minutes in behind eight quick points from Walker.
The Aggies managed to claw back though, behind the hot shooting of Foster, and narrowed the lead to as little as 62-56 midway through the half before a quick 7-1 spurt put the Lions back in front by double digits.
From there the Lion lead never shrank to less than nine points at any point of the game's final seven minutes.
A&M-Commerce will now go on the road again for a Saturday date with Midwetsern State in Wichita Falls. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m.
