Box Score
WICHITA FALLS, Texas – A career high 25 points from
Devin Oliver was not enough, as the Lions could not sweep the Mustangs for the first time since the 1995-96 season. The 100 points scored by Midwestern State is the most for a Lion opponent since 2011-12 season when West Texas A&M scored 110 versus A&M-Commerce.
Midwestern State (13-8, 5-5 Lone Star Conference) shot 54 percent from the floor and had an answer for every time the Lions tried to mount a comeback. A&M-Commerce (4-15, 3-7) was unable to recover after an 11-0 run to start the game by Midwestern State despite Oliver's career night.
Oliver's 25 led the Lions. The junior guard also recorded three rebounds and three steals.
Breanna Harris added 10 points and six rebounds while
Ashlee Johnson came off the bench to score 10 points and hand out five assists.
Midwestern State wasted little time in letting the Lions know this was not going to be like the game earlier this season in Commerce, that Lions won in overtime. The Mustangs force seven Lion turnovers and held a 13-4 lead after the first five minutes of play.
The Lions got to within seven but the Mustangs extended the lead to 15, 23-8, after a layup from Lynn Lumpkin-Boozer just before the 10-minute mark. The lead would remain double digits for the remainder of the half as the Mustangs would take a 40-30 lead into the break.
A&M-Commerce cut the lead to single digits in the opening minutes of the second half. An Oliver layup made it 48-40 with 17:03 to play in the game but that would be as close as the Lions would get. Midwestern State would stretch the lead out to 19 in the next seven minutes and eventually push the lead to its largest of the game, 36, with 2:29 to play in the game.
The Lions now step out of conference on Monday when South Dakota School of Mines comes to Commerce for a 5:30 tip on Monday evening. It is the first ever meeting between the two schools. Then on Thursday the Lions get back into LSC play when they travel to Kingsville to try and split the season series with the Javelinas.
