The A&M-Commerce Lions welcomes fans back to The Field House winning three straight sets after dropping the first against the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds.
Turning PointHalfway through the fourth set, the Lions picked up the pace with a run forcing an Eastern New Mexico timeout with the match slipping away. In that run,
Veronika Baric had two kills and
Sydney Reyes also found the floor once. In addition to the kills, Eastern New Mexico added a service and attack error all prior to the timeout.
HOW IT HAPPENEDSet 1 In a very slow and seesaw set, the Greyhounds found a way to pull away and get a 25-19 victory over the Lions. Three consecutive errors by the Lions late in the first set gave the Greyhounds the momentum they needed and Brooklyn Biel finalized it with a kill for set point.
Set 2Neither team wanted to relinquish their power in a set that resulted in ten ties and six lead changes.
Veronika Baric stole the show in the second set assembling six kills and a hitting percentage of .556 in the second set alone.
Jaslyn Wacker and
Taryn Driver also contributed on the defensive end with three blocks each that lifted the Lions over the Greyhounds 25-21 to even the match at one game each.
Set 3The Lions continued their aggressive nature on the defensive side of the net with five total team blocks. On the contrary, the Greyhounds struggled recording a hitting percentage of .098 as a team with three players in the negatives. In addition to
Taryn Driver's two blocks, she also carried the load in the third set offensively leading both teams with five kills. The Lions trailed once in this set, which was due to an attack error by
Summer Alford on the very first play of the set. The Lions won the third set 25-21 and took a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Set 4Tensions started to rise in The Field House as the Lions fought to close out the match and avoid a fifth set. The Greyhounds had no answer for Baric as she exploded for eight kills and brought great energy to the Lion team and fans. Although the Greyhounds kept the set close,
Taryn Driver retired the set after a beautiful set by
Courtney Tate. The Lions won 25-21.
