Commerce, Texas – The Lions see Midwestern State for the first time after being bumped out of the Lone Star Conference Tournament in the second round last year.
The Lions are now 2-2 in conference play after a close game resulting in an 81-74 loss against Texas Woman's. With the Lions Lone Star Conference record at .500, the Lions lead the conference in scoring, averaging 74.8 points per game, and shoots 40 percent from the floor, which ties them in second place in the conference. Five Lions are now scoring nine points per game consisting of
Artaejah Gay,
Princess Davis,
Amari Jones,
Gabby Scott, and
Shomari Harris.
Princess Davis has had four consecutive games scoring in double figures, and shoots 82.4 percent (14-of-17) from the charity stripe. In the four Lone Star Conference games for the Lions,
Artaejah Gay leads the way in scoring with 12.8 points per game and shoots just under 50 percent (15-of-31) from the floor.
The Mustangs are on a two-game winning streak after defeating Eastern New Mexico 61-55, and Tarleton State 56-52. Midwestern State's two conference losses came at the hands of Texas Woman's and West Texas A&M. Both of these losses came on the road. In fact, the Mustangs are winless on the road this season, posting a 0-4 record. Midwestern State's win over Eastern New Mexico ended a nine-game losing streak for the Mustangs. For the season in its entirety, the Mustangs average 53.1 points per game. Whitney Taylor leads the Mustangs in scoring with 8.4 points per game this season. However, since conference play has started, Jennifer Sissel has caught fire, and averages 13.8 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game, placing her in the top ten of Lone Star Conference players in each category. Sissel has recorded double-doubles in the last two games. Noel Johnson is in her eighth season at the helm of the Mustang program, posting a 116-95 record. Johnson has not had a losing season since the 2010-11 season where the Mustangs went 10-16.
The Lions are 18-42 all-time versus Midwestern State and are on a current four-game losing streak including last year's 60-65 loss in the Lone Star Conference Tournament. The Lions are also 4-6 in the last ten meetings between the two programs at The Field House. The last home win for the Lions against Midwestern State came in January of 2014 where the Lions won 71-64 in an overtime thriller. Tip-off is slated for 4 pm on Saturday, January 16.
