Women's golf sets school scoring record to win OBU Fall Invitational

Tournament victory is first in school history

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. - After a playoff hole, the Texas A&M University-Commerce women's golf team picked up the first tournament win in program history at the Oklahoma Baptist University Fall Invitational on Tuesday. The Lions' 299-291=590 sets a school scoring record as well.

After the completion of 36 holes, the Lions were tied with Redlands CC. All five players played the 18th hole and the Lions' score of 19 beat Redlands' 21 to earn the team title. A&M-Commerce women's golf had not won in tournament action since the beginning of the program in 1997. A&M-Commerce and Redlands outpaced the rest of the field by 26 strokes.

"There's not much more that you can say that the scores didn't reflect. I couldn't be more proud of how these girls have bought into what we are trying to do and now the results have shown for the second straight week," said A&M-Commerce head golf coach Tyler Schiffelbein. "It's always special when you can get in the record books once, but to do it three times in the same tournament is something to truly be proud of. From breaking three hundred for the first time ever, then eclipsing that mark by 8 for a new record low, all along winning the event, this shows how hard these ladies have worked and they deserve all the credit."

Emily Taylor shot matching 73's in both days of the tournament to finish as runner-up with a 146. Redlands' Marion Benzekri earned medalist honors at 144.

Three Lions tied for fourth place in an impressive performance. Anya Anders' 3-under par 69 Tuesday was the lowest individual round of the tournament. Anders, Celeste Emeott and Makena Thomas all shot 148 (+4) for the event.

Marisa Delgado tied for 36th with a 164 score. Emily White competed as an individual, tying for 16th at 155.

The Lions will look to carry the momentum of the historic tournament victory into next week's West Texas Lady Buff Invitational at Tascosa Golf Club in Amarillo. The tournament will be played on Monday and Tuesday.
