The Lions are coming off of two home wins and a home loss last week. The Lions defeated Dallas Christian on Monday and had a dramatic overtime win over Tarleton State, which included a buzzer-beating three-pointer to send the game into extra time. The Lions then fell to a hot-shooting Cameron team.
The Lions are ranked No. 22 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II poll, their fifth consecutive week being nationally ranked. It is the third time in program history the team has been in the top 25 for at least five weeks.
The Lions begin a five-game road trip which includes the two longest road trips of the season in back-to-back weeks. The team starts with a game against Western New Mexico on Thursday. The Lions defeated the Mustangs 75-58 on Dec. 9 at the Field House in the teams' first meeting of the year. The Lions held the lead for the majority of the game and held the Mustangs to just 33 percent shooting.
The Lions will then make a trip across the state to face Eastern New Mexico on Saturday. A&M-Commerce won the first matchup 85-78 on Dec. 7, having four players finish in double figures. The Lions shot lights out in the game, shooting 61 percent from the field and 42 percent from three. It was a back-and-forth game throughout, with 15 lead changes before the Lions pulled away late in the second half.
