Perez' Player of the Year honor leads six Lions on Don Hansen All-American teams

BROOKFIELD, Ill. – As spring football concludes in preparation for the 2018 season, the National Champion Texas A&M University-Commerce football program has six players honored as All-Americans by the Don Hansen Football Committee, as released on Thursday, March 22.

Quarterback Luis Perez was named the Offensive Player of the Year and a first team All-American, while offensive tackle Jared Machorro was named a first team All-American.

Tight end Vincent Hobbs was named a second team All-American, kicker Kristov Martinez was named a third team All-American, and defensive end Michael Onuoha and linebacker Brucks Saathoff were named honorable mention All-Americans.

The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen's Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.

Perez was the winner of the 2017 Harlon Hill Trophy, awarded the top Division II college football player in the nation. He completed 421-of-596 passes for 4,999 yards, 46 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. The 4,999 yards are the fourth-most by a quarterback in a single Division II season. He also set Division II Championship records for pass completions (144), pass attempts (211) and passing yards (1,570). He became the first quarterback to pass for over 300 yards in the National Championship game since 2005 and tied a Lone Star Conference record for the most 200-yard passing games in a season with 14. He became the first Harlon Hill Trophy winner to also win a Division II National Championship since 2002 and only the sixth overall in the 32-year history of Division II's premier football award.

For his career, Perez completed 665-of-985 passes for 8,325 yards, 78 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. He was the starting quarterback for 28 games, leading the Lions to a 25-3 record, two NCAA Division II playoff appearances, and a Lone Star Conference championship. He completed his collegiate career leading the Lions on a 10-game winning streak, which is the longest active winning streak in Division II.

He was previously named a First Team All-American by D2Football.com, the Division II Conference Commissioners Association, and the Associated Press, and a Second Team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association. He was also named the Ron Lenz Offensive Player of the Year by the D2CCA and D2Football.com Offensive Player of the Year. He won the J.W. Rollins Award as the Lone Star Conference's Offensive Player of the Year and is a two-time First Team All-Lone Star Conference selection at quarterback.

Machorro earns his ninth career All-American honor, as he was also named a First Team All-American by the American Football Coaches' Association, the Division II Conference Commissioners Association, and D2Football.com, and a Second Team All-American by the Associated Press.

The Lone Star Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year paved the way for the nation's No. 2 passing offense on the way to the National Championship. The outstanding blocker was one of the nation's top blocker, as the Lions allowed fewer than two sacks per game, while the offense dropped back to pass more than 45 times per game.

Hobbs earns his first career All-American honor after finishing the 2017 season as the tight end with the most receiving yards in Division II. He had 64 receptions for 785 yards and seven touchdowns in his junior campaign, including four touchdowns in the playoffs. He had two games with over 100 yards receiving with 144 against UT Permian Basin and 105 against Midwestern State. He was previously named First Team All-Lone Star Conference.

Martinez earns his second career All-American honor after being named honorable mention by Don Hansen's in 2016. He led the Lone Star Conference in field goal percentage (85.7 percent), field goals per game (1.6), and a school single season record for total points scored (137). He became the Lions' all-time leading scorer with 338 points scored through his first three seasons. He made 65-of-66 PAT attempts and 24-of-28 field goals, including a perfect 16-of-16 on PATs and 11-of-12 on field goals in the playoffs. He was named second team all-region by the D2CCA, first team all-Lone Star Conference, and Lone Star Conference All-Academic.

Onuoha earns his first career All-American honor after earning first team all-Lone Star Conference honors. From his defensive end position, Onuoha made 56 tackles with 12 tackles for loss and five sacks with a forced fumble in the first round of the playoffs at Winona State. He had at least one tackle for loss in seven consecutive games to end the season and had 21 tackles in the playoffs.

Saathoff earns his first career All-American honor. He was a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award as the small college defensive player of the year. He finished as the leading tackler for the 2017 National Champions with 101 stops including six tackles for loss and four sacks. He had six tackles and a sack in the National Championship Game. He was previously named a first team all-Lone Star Conference selection at linebacker. He had double digit tackles in four games, including 11 at Central Washington and 14 in the National Semifinal victory over Harding. He was named Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week against West Texas A&M when he made 12 tackles and forced a fumble.
