The Lions are coming off of a two-week break after rain canceled their games last week. Head coach
Richie Bruister said the break allowed his team to rest both physically and mentally.
"It's allowed us to mentally prepare," Bruister said. "It's a long season and a tough season. We've played in a lot of tough games. It wears on you mentally and physically. This has given us an opportunity to do some different things in practice and also to take a little bit of a break from the normal routine. I feel like we have taken advantage of that opportunity. Practice has looked really good this week."
During the break, the first rendition of the NCAA Regional rankings was released. While Bruister is pleased his team is in the top two, he is focused on keeping his team playing well. He knows there is still two weeks before the final rankings are released.
"There is still a lot of work to do," he said. "Playing Cameron this week, they are number five in the region. Tarleton and WT are playing against each other this weekend, as number three and number four. There is still a lot of softball left. We want to be at the top and being talked about. But it doesn't mean anything yet. We have to control what we can control this week. We just have to go out there and do our job. But it is certainly awesome for our program. We've been ranked in every regular season poll since the start of our program."
The Lions now face Cameron, who comes in with a 32-12 record and in fourth place in the LSC standings. With a lot on the line both in the LSC and in the region, Bruister knows it will take his team's best effort to come out on top.
"We are just going to have to play our game," he said. "We are looking forward to this week. It is going to be a great atmosphere. There are a lot of alumni coming and lots of new things going on. It is an exciting time for Lion Softball. I'm glad we are able to be a part of it this late in the season. We are all very excited."
Bruister sees a talented Cameron team coming to Commerce. He knows it will be another tough LSC series and he knows his team will have to be ready for anything.
"They do everything well," Bruister said of Cameron. "They have good pitching, good offense, good defense, they run the bases. We are going to have to be prepared in every aspect of our game and go out there and do the things that we do. We have been preparing ourselves all year for this type of matchup. It's what we do every week in the Lone Star. Every week, we play a good team. You don't ever get a break. We are going to be prepared and they will be too. It will be a great week of softball."
