Second-seed Lions prepped for third-seed Lady Buffs in LSC Championship Semifinal

COMMERCE – The 10th-ranked Texas A&M University-Commerce women's basketball team continues its postseason journey with the second semifinal of the Lone Star Conference Women's Basketball Championship against No. 22 West Texas A&M.

The latest… 
A&M-Commerce is the top scoring offense in the LSC at 77.8 points per game and defeated Oklahoma Christian, 77-63, in the quarterfinals of the LSC Tournament.
 
The Lions are ranked fourth in the South Central Region, which will have six teams qualify for the tournament in Sunday night's selection show.
 
The Lions had five players named to All-LSC teams. Dyani Robinson and DesiRay Kernal were named first team All-LSC, Juliana Louis and Chania Wright were named third team All-LSC, and Agang Tac earned honorable mention.
 
Robinson – a sophomore from Cypress (Langham Creek) – earns all-LSC honors for the second time after being named to the third team and LSC Freshman of the Year in 2019-20. Entering the LSC Championship semifinals, she leads the LSC in scoring at 18.3 points per game with a career high 29 points in the regular season finale against Midwestern State. She scored in double figures in all 11 games she played, with over 20 points in five games. She ranks ninth in the league in shooting percentage at 42.7 percent and 10th in the league in assists at 3.6 dimes per game.
 
Kernal – a sophomore from Newton, Kan. – earns all-LSC honors for the first time. Entering the LSC Championship semifinals, she ranks fifth in the LSC in scoring at 15.6 points per game. She scored a career high 26 points at Midwestern State, scoring in double digits in 11 of 14 games with four games of 20 or more points. She also ranks seventh in the conference in rebounding at 7.5 boards per game, including a stunning 17 boards in the quarterfinal win over Oklahoma Christian. She had three double-doubles on the year and is in the top 10 in the league in free throw percentage.
 
Wright – a senior from DeSoto – earns her third career all-LSC honor. She was a second team honoree in 2019-20 and a third team honoree in 2018-19. She averaged 12.3 points per game, with eight games in double figures, including exactly 16 points in each of the last three games. She ranks in the top 20 in the conference in scoring and is 10th in three-point shooting.
 
Louis – a senior from Long Beach, Calif. – earns her first career all-LSC honor. She averaged 10.9 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. She had three double-doubles on the year, with season highs of 15 points and 16 rebounds. She ranks fifth in the league in rebounding and free throw percentage, and 12th in blocked shots. She is the fifth Lion to earn all-defensive team honors.
 
Tac – a senior from Sachse – earns her first career all-LSC honor, averaging 5.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. She also ranked sixth in the conference in blocked shots and 14th in rebounds.
 
On the opponent…
WT ranks sixth in the conference in scoring offense at 67.8 points per game, but the Lady Buffs have made their mark on defense, allowing only 55.3 points per game. The Lady Buffs are ranked seventh in the South Central Region.
 
Lexy Hightower was named the league's Player of the Year for the second time to go along with First Team honors while Braylyn Dollar picked up her second consecutive Sixth Woman of the Year accolade. Jillian Sowell was named to the All-Freshman Team while Hightower also earned All-Academic honors.
 
Hightower, a two-time LSC Player of the Year, has gone 130-of-240 (54.2%) from the floor this season including 31-of-74 (41.9%) from deep and 56-of-64 (87.5%) from the free throw line to average 17.4 points per game which ranks second in the LSC. The Amarillo High product now ranks seventh on WT's all-time scoring list with 1,625 career points.
 
On the series history…
This is the 69th meeting in the series, with the Lions owning seven wins in the series. WT has won the last six meetings.
