GLEN ROSE – After shooting the best round in school history to qualify for medal match play at the Lone Star Conference Championships, the Texas A&M University-Commerce women's golf tied West Texas A&M in the semifinals on Friday afternoon, but the Lady Buffs advanced via a tiebreaker on the Squaw Valley Golf Course.
The Lions shot 14-under par in the third round of stroke play to finish third and drew the No. 2 seed, Lady Buffs. Both teams tied 2-2-1 in match play, and it came down to tiebreakers to determine who advanced to the championship match. The Lady Buffs' five golfers outshot the Lions' five golfers by three strokes during the match, which ended up being the difference.
A&M-Commerce now awaits the selection announcement for the NCAA West Regional on Monday afternoon. The Lions were ranked No. 7 in the latest regional rankings.
"I couldn't be prouder of the ladies and the way they played today," said coach
Lise Malherbe. "The things they accomplished today both as a program and individually is incredible."
"Heart breaking loss this afternoon, but still so many positives to take away and hopefully take to regionals!"
West Texas A&M's Alyssa Campbell trailed
Sarah Wongsinth (Udon Thani, Thailand) throughout the match until an eagle by her on the 17
th hole and a birdie on the 18
th hole, put her over Wongsinth in the first match by three strokes.
Inma Ortiz Prieto (Huelva, Spain) won by four strokes over Antonella Periotti Omisolo to level the match at one.
The Lady Buffs took the 2-1 advantage by taking the third match by four strokes. Antonella Periotti Omisolo defeated
Michelle Becker (San Antonio – Raegan).
Sophie-Charlott Hempel (Pirmasens, Germany) tied the match at four by edging out Gam Songprasert by one stroke. The match was tied going into hole No. 17, which was birdied by Hempel.
It all came down to match five with the overall score tied at two. The Lions'
Karlee Nichols (San Antonio – Smithson Valley) had a one-stroke lead going into the 18
th hole against Rylie Cook. Nichols bogeyed the final hole, and it came down to tiebreakers to determine the overall winner.
In the morning, Hempel carded a round of 67 to finish the stroke play portion of the LSC Championships with a score of 215 (71-77-67) and placed in a tie for 11
th on the leaderboard. Wongsinth tied for 10
th place with a round of 68 on Friday and totaled a score of 214 (77-69-68). Becker also tied for 11
th place, shooting a 68 on Friday and had rounds of 75 and 72 on Thursday.
Ortiz Prieto placed in a tied for 21
st place with a score of 218 (74-73-71) and Nichols tied for 31
st place with a round of 224 (74-78-72). The Lions totaled a team score of 274 in the third round to climb three spots and punch a ticket to the medal match play round. The 14-under par mark on Friday surpasses the previous program best of 5-under.
DBU's Jordan Karrh won the individual championship by one stroke, totaling a score of 208 (65-73-70). The Patriots and the Lady Buffs will compete for the LSC team championship on Saturday.
