Madison Schaefer named to CoSIDA Academic All-America third team

AUSTIN – Texas A&M University-Commerce softball third baseman Madison Schaefer has been named to the Academic All-America Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), on Tuesday morning.

Schaefer (Frisco – Independence) is a finance major and received her undergraduate degree this spring, wrapping up her junior season on the field. She led the team in all three triple crown statistical categories and was selected to first team All-Lone Star Conference, helping the Lions win their first LSC Tournament Championship, and host their third straight NCAA South Central Regional.

"We all know Madison Schaefer to be an exceptional athlete, but what she proves year after year is that she's also an exceptional student," said coach Gay McNutt. "What an amazing honor to be named an Academic All-American! I am beyond proud of Madison and all she has accomplished."

The junior third baseman has been named on the president's list five times, dean's list four times, selected as a Best in Class scholar five times, received athletic director's honor roll distinction four times, and named to the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll eight times. She is the third student-athlete in program history to receive CoSIDA Academic All-America honors joining Mariah Jameyson (2018) and Kylene Hatton (2016). She is the second student-athlete from A&M-Commerce to receive Academic All-America honors in 2021-22, joining Alex Shillow from the football team.

Schaefer returns to Commerce in 2023 for her final season in the blue and gold as the Lions begin play in Division I as members of the Southland Conference.
