Mitchell, Griffin, Storey named to Southland All-Academic teams

FRISCO – Three Texas A&M University-Commerce soccer student-athletes earned Southland Conference All-Academic recognition on Thursday.
 
Nya Mitchell (Dallas – Mesquite Horn) is named to the first team, while both Hailey Griffin (Trophy Club – Byron Nelson) and Melissa Storey (Tyne and Wear, England) are named to the second team.
 
Mitchell was named to First Team All-SLC, while being a Dean's List scholar and Commissioner's List honoree. She has been named to the all-conference teams in each of the last two seasons and played all but three minutes in conference play with the Lions recording three shutouts in conference play and four overall. Playing in the backline, she was a part of the defensive unit that was fourth in the SLC in goals against and was named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week once.
 
Griffin is named to the Academic SLC team for the second straight season. She was also named to the Dean's List and SLC Commissioner's Honor Roll. She was a part of the Lions recording three shutouts in conference play and four overall. Playing in the backline, she was also a part of the defensive unit that was fourth in the SLC in goals against.
 
Storey was named to Second Team All-SLC, named SLC Offensive Player of the Week once. She finished conference play being ranked seventh in assists, match-winning goals, and points. Storey is also a Dean's List scholar and named to Commissioner's Honor Roll in every semester.
 
It is the second straight season that the Lions had three honorees on the all-academic teams. The Lions went 9-7-3 last season, finishing second in the Southland Conference with a record of 7-1-2.

Southland Conference All-Academic Teams are voted upon by the head coach, sports information director and an academic/compliance staff member from each school. Student-Athletes of the Year are voted upon by an awards committee which consists of one administrator from each member school. Voting for one's own athletes is not permitted.
 
To be eligible for all-academic distinction, an athlete must hold a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average through the semester prior to the sport's championship, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating school prior to the current season, and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions during the most recently completed season. Student-Athlete of the Year nominees must have held at least a 3.50 GPA and have completed at least two years of athletic competition at the nominating school, including the current season.
 
First Team All-Conference athletes who meet all-academic nomination criteria are automatically named all-academic.
