WASHBURN, Kan. – Maia Maury repeated as the women's pentathlon champion at the Washburn Open for the Texas A&M University-Commerce track and field teams inside the Washburn Indoor Athletic Facility this weekend.
 
Maury (Noisy-Le-Grand, France), who was the champion of the pentathlon at Washburn last season, was in third place after the first four events and recorded the fastest time in the 800 meter run to climb two spots. She tied for the win with Washburn's Naiuri Krein, but Maury won the tiebreaker as she had more points than Krein in three of the five events. Both athletes totaled 3,497 points.
 
For Maury, that point total is second in the Southland Conference this season and 15^th in the region. She won two of the five events, taking first in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet 4.5 inches (1.64m) and timing 2:21.83 in the 800 meter run.
 
Elizabeth Ortiz (Palacios) also competed in the pentathlon and took fifth with a point total of 3,178. She placed second in both the 60 meter hurdles and the long jump. She climbed a spot after the 800 meter run as well. Ortiz' point total is fifth in the SLC this season.
 
On the men's side, Trey Wheeler (Scurry-Rosser) took 16^th with a total of 4,083 points in the heptathlon. He climbed a spot in the 1,000 meter run to close out the event. He sits in fourth place on the Southland leaderboard.
 
In other action for the Lions in the meet, Jordan Johnson (Guateng, South Africa) timed 7.06 seconds and 8.34 seconds in the 60 meter dash and the 60 meter hurdles, respectively.
