FRISCO – Five East Texas A&M University football players were named to second team all-Southland Conference on Tuesday morning, which is tied for the most all-conference honorees for the Lions in the Division I era.
Wide receivers
Devin Matthews (Seguin) and
Christian Jourdain (New Orleans) as well as offensive lineman
Jadin Jones (Killeen) and linebackers
Kyree Anderson (Cy-Lakes) and
Koby-Sebasyen King (Houston – Summer Creek) are named to the second team. This year's group of five is tied with the five all-conference honors in 2022 for the most in the Division I era.
Anderson finished the season as the conference leader in tackles with 84 in conference play, including 3.5 sacks and eight tackles for loss. On the season, he totaled 105 tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss in 12 games along with one interception, four breakups, five hurries, two fumble recoveries, and four forced fumbles, forcing three in SLC action, which leads the conference. This is the first all-conference honor for Anderson, who was named the Southland Defensive Player of the Week following the win over UIW.
Jones played offensive tackle for the top scoring offense in the SLC during conference play, starting every game. The team averaged 126.1 rushing yards per game. He has also been named to an all-conference team for the first team in his career.
King was the overall tackles leader for East Texas A&M with 113 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, two hurries, and one forced fumble. In conference play, King was third in tackles and third in tackles for loss. King has earned all-conference honors for the first time in his career as well.
Jourdain tallied team-best 799 receiving yards on 59 catches and two touchdowns, averaging 66.6 yards per game overall. He was fifth in the conference with 553 yards against SLC opponents. Jourdain has been named to second team all-Southland for the second year in a row.
Matthews totaled 649 yards on 36 catches and seven touchdowns in 11 games played. He was sixth in the conference in receiving yards during conference play and tied for third in receiving touchdowns and is also a first-time all-conference honoree.
The Lions went 3-9 this season, while going 3-5 against Southland opponents, tying for seventh place. The Lions won three conference games for the second time in the Division I era, and this is the first season East Texas A&M did not have a first team all-conference honoree since 1978.
