Lions begin Texas Tech Shootout with two best marks among Division II athletes

LUBBOCK – The Texas A&M University-Commerce track and field teams began the Texas Tech Shootout on Friday at the Sport Performance Center with four Lions posting best or second best marks among all Division II student-athletes at the meet.  
 
The highlights for the Lions include Delan Edwin (Castriens, Saint Lucia) having the fastest time among non-Division I runners and fifth overall in the 60 meter dash, Dodley Thermitus (Elizabeth, N.J.) also placing fifth overall and best among Division II participants in the long jump, and Mariana Shostak (Ukraine) winning the 'B section' 400 meter dash.
 
The action resumes in Lubbock on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with the shot put in the field and the first race on the track is the 200 meter dash at 11 a.m.
 
DAY 1 RESULTS
 
MEN
Edwin clocked in a time of 6.71 in the 60 meter dash, finishing fifth in the finals and the top time among Division II runners.
 
In the 'B section' of the 400 meter dash, Maxime Woirin (Lyon, France) timed 49.30 seconds to place fifth. Jordan Hollis (Lancaster) raced in the 'A section' 400 meter dash and timed 48.10 to finish 20th.
 
Thermitus jumped 23 feet 8.75 inches (7.23m) to place fifth in the long jump. His mark was the best among Division II athletes. Travyeon Franklin (Montgomery) placed 11th with a mark of 21 feet 7.25 inches (6.58m). In the 'B section' of the long jump, Tyris Jefferson (Tyler – Lee) placed eighth with a mark of 22 feet 0.25 inches (6.71m) and Chandler King (Hughes Springs) finished 10th with a mark of 21 feet 5.25 inches (6.54m).
 
Cameron Macon (Dallas – Carter) had the second fastest time among Division II runners in the 60 meter hurdles, 8.12. He placed eighth overall in the finals.
 
The Lions closed out the day with the 5000 meter races. Alex Speer (Robinson) timed 15:39.43 in the main race to place fourth, while Casey Novelo (Burleson – Trinity) clocked in a time of 16:01.32 in the 'B section', finishing third. Chris Navarrete (Laredo – Lyndon B. Johnson) and Colten Van Voorhis (Prosper – Rock Hill) finished 8-9 with times of 16:56.42 and 17:43.40 respectively.
 
WOMEN
Mariana Shostak (Ukraine) won the 'B section' of the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.42 seconds, Sofia Khenfar (Lyon, France) finished fourth with a time of 56.91 seconds. Minna Sveard (Karlstad, Sweden) timed 56.09 in the 400 meter dash, she finished second among Division II runners.
 
In the final women's race of the day, Yenifer Martinez (Irving – Nimitz) clocked in a time of 21:12.63 in the 5,000 meter run to finish 12th and Evelyn Brown (Paris) placed 15th with a time of 21:57.72.
 
Iniuto Ukpong (Arlington – Mansfield Summit) threw 51 feet 10.5 inches (15.81 inches) in the 'B section' of the weight throw to finish ninth.
