Lion Track & Field takes part in Owen Hewett Invitational

COMMERCE – The East Texas A&M University track & field teams are back in action this weekend at the Owen Hewett Invitational in Norman, Oklahoma, on Friday.

WHAT'S NEXT
The Lions are off next week and then take part in the Stan Scott Memorial in Lubbock on January 30-February 1 and the Robert Platt Invitational in Houston on January 31-February 1. 
 
A LOOK AT THE LIONS
Last week, the Lions took part in the McFerrin-12 Degree Invitational in College Station, setting three school records in the first full team meet of the season. Two Lion student-athletes also earned Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Week honors as Kiara Brown (Dallas - Carter) was named the Women's Track Athlete of the Week, setting the school record in the 300 meter dash and being a part of the SLC-leading 4x400 meter relay team, while Veronika Kramarenko (Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine) won the high jump event over four Power Four conference schools, set a school record, and ranks eighth in NCAA Division I. 

Enoch Fosuhene (Accra, Ghana) set the school record in the 300 meter dash on the men's side as well. Heading into this week's meet at Oklahoma, Tyke Owens (Lebanon Trail) and Kingsley Ayebide (Sapele, Nigeria) rank in the top five in the Southland in the 60 meter dash, while Hope Tomabari Nagbi (Lewe Gokana, Nigeria) and Trent Granberry (Douglassville - Queen City) are in the top five in the 400 meter dash. Christian James (Rosharon - Manvel) and Tarus Cook (Cumberland Academy) rank in the top four in the 800 meter dash, while the Lions have the top five times in the 5,000 meter run led by Alex Speer (Robinson), followed by Casey Novelo (Bedford - Trinity), Nicholas Deutsch (Frisco), Jeremiah Garcia (Northwest Eaton), and Josh Shanahan (Noosaville, Australia). Cash Goodman (Blue Ridge) and Evan Ealy (Klein Collins) are 1-2 in the 60 meter hurdles and RJ Fannin (Princeton) is fourth. The Lion 4x400 meter relay on the men's side is second in the conference. 

In field events, Seniru Amarasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka) is tied for second in the high jump, while Justin Vincent (Agde, France) is second in the long jump, while Joseph Rolland (Wills Point) and Tahje Parrish (Picayunne, Miss.) are 3-4 in the triple jump. 

On the women's side, Hailey Ayers (Cy Ranch) is fourth in the 60 meter dash, while Sydnee Wilson (Lewisville) leads the Southland in the 200 meter dash. Roane Lion (Georgetown - East View) and Mia Abraham (DeSoto) are 4-5 in the 400 meter dash and Magdaline Campo (Montpellier, France) is fifth in the 60 meter hurdles. The women's 4x400 meter relay team is fastest in the SLC by nine seconds. 

Along with Kramarenko, who leads in the high jump, Campo is tied for second in the high jump, while Tina Samson (Benin, Nigeria) is fourth in the long jump, while Dejah Fuller (Waxahachie Life) leads the way in the triple jump, followed by Amaka Ezukanma (Fort Worth - Timber Creek) in second. Cassandra Rendon (San Antonio - Madison) is fifth in the weight throw.
