MATHEWS, La. – For the second year in a row, the East Texas A&M University men's golf team is the LaTour Intercollegiate Champion, repeating as the tournament champions with an 846 total over three rounds at LaTour Golf Club.
Daniel Ferguson also won the individual medal, being the first individual medalist in the Division I era.
The Lions have repeated as champions of the same tournament for the first time since winning the UAFS Hardscrabble Invitational in 2018 and 2019. East Texas A&M posted rounds of 273, 285 and 288 at LaTour GC.
"I am so proud of this group and the way they competed this week. To come away with an eight-shot team victory, an individual championship, and four guys finishing inside the top 10 is a tremendous accomplishment for our program," said coach
Jason Eslinger. "We've talked a lot about what it takes to compete at a high level, and it's exciting to see these guys continue to grow and take steps in the right direction. I'm especially proud of
Daniel Ferguson for earning the individual championship. He played outstanding golf this week, he really set the tone for us with his opening round 65!
"It's great to see kids that work as hard as he does be rewarded. We also had some really strong performances throughout our lineup, and that's what it takes to win as a team. When I took over this program, I told the guys that we had an opportunity to start writing our own history book and building something special here at East Texas A&M. This week, we wrote the first chapter. There's still a lot of work ahead of us and plenty of pages left to write, but I couldn't be more excited about the direction we're headed and what the future holds for this program. Go Lions!"
Ferguson (Duncanville) finished first at 207, opening with a 65 before posting consecutive even-par 71s. He is the first solo individual medalist for the Lions in the Division I era. Former Lion,
Janis Erll tied for first at last year's tournament, but lost in the playoff for the individual medal.
Brady Mann (Bridgeport) tied for fourth at 213 and closed at 70, while
Cooper Watt (Rockford, Ill.) also tied for fourth at 213 after an opening 68.
Axel Larsen (Sarpsborg, Norway) tied for 11
th with a score of 216 and
Linus Samuelsen (Stavanger, Norway) tied for 22
