An alum of East Texas State, Winfred Essix is no stranger to football in Commerce. He coached wide receivers after graduating with a bachelor's in mathematics for two years in the late 1980's.Most recently, he was the head coach of the bi-district champion Fannindel High School, which finished the season 8-2. That was a four-win swing from his first season as head coach in 2000.In his playing days with the Lions, Essix was a Lone Star Conference Player of the Week three times. He led the conference in receptions and touchdowns while ranking in the top 25 in the nation during his senior season. He was an unanimous first-team all-LSC pick to add to his recognition.He also played with Mississippi State for a year before moving to Commerce and was a state medalist in golf during high school in Murrah, Miss. Winfred earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average with a master's in kinesiology and human performance in 2004 from Texas A&M-Commerce. He has worked in the scholarship office as a director as well as been an advisor to the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.He is married to the former Stacey Davis of Greenville, who competed on the Texas A&M-Commerce track and field, for the past 18 years. They have three children--Yakira (17), Danielle (15), and Dahyana (12).
