Gaines joined the ETSU basketball team in 1966 after transferring from Henderson County Junior College. He played two years for the Lions and was team captain for the 1967-68 squad. During the 1966-67 season, Gaines set the school record by taking 36 shots in a game. He went on to be named Second Team All-LSC. During the 1967-68 season, Gaines played in only 13 games but led the conference in scoring average, setting the school record by averaging 25.1 points per game, a record that still stands.
Gaines went on to be drafted in the 15th round of the NBA Draft by the San Diego Rockets and played one game professionally in the ABA with the Houston Mavericks in 1969.
