An All-American lineman in 1955, Dean Hesse helped lead the Lions to three consecutive Lone Star Conference championships in 1953, 1954 and 1955 during his four years with the Lions. The 10-0-1 1953 Lions were Tangerine Bowl co-champs with a 7-7 tie against Arkansas State.
Hesse was named a First Team All-American in 1955, was a two-time First Team All-LSC selection at tackle and was named to the All-Texas Team in 1956. During his career, the Lions were 23-15-3. He played one year under "Catfish" Smith and three years under J.V. Sikes.
Hesse was also a member of the Lion track team, competing in the shot put and the discus. He was named First Team All-LSC in 1957 after winning the conference title in the shot put with a throw of 49-feet 5.5-inches. Hesse also once held the Lion discus record of 147-feet.
