Compton was an active member of the Lion football squad during his four seasons. He was a member of the first Lion team to make the NCAA Division II playoffs, helping the 1990 Lions to an LSC Championship and a second round appearance in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Compton was a two-time All-America selection, a four-time All-LSC selection and the 1990 Lone Star Conference Outstanding Back of the Year.

Compton finished his career as the school and conference record holder in total receptions (181), receiving yards (3,041) and receiving touchdowns (30). He also held the school record for most receiving touchdowns in a season (12). He led the team in receptions and receiving yards in three consecutive seasons. As of 2017, he still holds the school records for receiving yards, receptions and receiving touchdowns.
