"Dub" Lewis was a four-year letterwinner on the Lion football team on the offensive line. Originally a guard, he was moved to the center position on the line. He was a major contributor to the Lions' 1969 Lone Star Conference championship. In 1970, he was elected a team captain and earned two All-American awards, including a First Team All-America award. He was a two-time First Team All-LSC selection. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1971 and earned his graduate degree while acting as a graduate assistant coach for the Lions.

Lewis was voted the center on the All-LSC Team of the Decade from 1960-69.
