The son of fellow Lion Hall of Fame inductee Dee Mackey, Kyle Mackey came to ETSU as a basketball recruit but he would gain national recognition for his play on the football field. During his four-year career, the Lions posted a 29-13 record, including a record of 21-10 with Mackey as the starting quarterback. He helped propel the Lions to a share of the 1983 Lone Star Conference championship, the program's first LSC title in 11 years.

Mackey completed 372 passes for 5,800 yards and 42 touchdowns in his career, finishing his career as the all-time leading passer in school history. He was named LSC Outstanding Back of the Year in his senior season. As a junior, Mackey was named a Honorable Mention by the Associated Press and he was a three time All-LSC selection, including First Team All-LSC in 1983.

Following his Lion career, Mackey went on to be drafted in the NFL by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 11th round of the 1984 Draft. He went on to play in the NFL for six years as a member of the Cardinals, Philadelphia Eagles, Miami Dolphins and New York Jets. He also played two seasons in the Arena Football League.
